Typing skills are some of the most important skills a child can learn and it is never too early to begin learning. The typing goals that should be set depend on the age of the child, and it's important to find a program that can engage the child and make them want to practice. While touch typing skills do require practice, it is definitely worth the effort.

It can be argued that children under the age of three shouldn't be spending large amounts of time on computers. Even at that young age, though, children can benefit from learning the basics. At that age, it’s not important to set a word per minute goal, but to focus on technique and accuracy. Many kids typing programs are designed specifically to gain the attention of young children, and are filled with fun games and animated characters that keep kids entertained while teaching them the basics of typing.

By age 8, most children should be able to type at about 14 words per minute. Each year, with practice, most students should be able to add between 3 and 5 words per minute to their overall typing speed. By the time most students reach their teenage years, they should be able to type accurately between 25-30 words per minute. The average typing speed for adults should be between 35-50 words per minute, but it normally falls around 41.1 wpm.

Learning to properly touch type is by far the most important skill that anyone can learn. Much like learning a new language, studies have shown that it is easier to learn proper touch typing techniques for people ages 18 and under. This is the one skill above all others that will serve the user both in school and later on in the working world. Learning proper touch typing skills is the most important thing that anyone can learn.
